Art Update

For Art, I have finished my portfolio and this is the explanation of my artwork. My kaupapa is about water pollution and emission.

This is the first artwork in my panel 1 portfolio. Basically, this is like an introduction, the factory represents the idea of emission and a dirty water/sea represent the idea of water pollution. And also the man is like throwing a fishnet and it's shaped into a skull to emphasise the meaning that sea creatures are in danger.

The size A5 painting is the view of the factory from the small mountain. I intentionally paint the smoke in the shape of the whale to present the connection of the effect of the emission. As more CO2 is absorbed into the ocean, it lowers the pH balance of the water, causing it to be more acidic.  

I am happy with how it ended up, but while doing this I was not thinking of the size of the paper, which ended up being a size A5.

The first artwork connects with the paintings below. These paintings below are the common species that we would see in the social media that have fishnets around their body, therefore, for this series of sea creatures, I want to call this series "Preso" meaning trapped in Portugues. Even though this series is a bit far from my artist model artworks, as the patterns are in front of the subject, I decided to use the colours blue(background) and black(fishnet) as her most colour palette for environment or nature is aqua/sea colour pallet. 

Below the preso series is the series which I called "óleo" meaning oil. For this series, the black paint represents the oil spill that is from the chemical factory from the digital painting. The technique that I used for the first one is paint splatter and as for the middle painting, I put some black paint and then stamped it onto the painting to create a unique texture. The artwork on the right is a picture of a plastic that I moulded into the shape of jellyfish and then I edit it and put a picture of jellyfish. From my research, I found some artworks of my artist model that has dripping black paint, and this is where the idea of black paint came from. I just decided to have different types of patterns or shapes.

This is where panel 2 starts at. This artwork may look like it's based on Tracey Tawhiao as I added a paper, but the point of the paper is to represent rubbish. I have also seen the artwork of Sofia Minson that has a pattern of triangles and the pattern of my artwork is based on her. 





As for this series, I used photography(the first one), printmaking(second) and lastly I did digital artwork and then I tried to make an oil spill, using black paint with some water. This series starts off with water, as you can see it is clean water but then in the artwork below it becomes a drop of clean water mixed with oil, then it, later on, becomes a thick drop of oil. As for the last artwork, I have decided to put a vignette.

Putting them as a series or connecting them was not part of my plan, but then I see some connection between the three artwork, which make me decide to just put them together.


I would say that this artwork can be linked with the artwork above.
It may not be obvious but the empty Pepsi can is a picture taken by me then I edited it and put a tail of a fish to make it look like a fish is hiding behind the Pepsi can or make it look like the Pepsi can is a fish. I also added to put a group of redfish that can be seen in the artwork below.



This artwork is still linked with emission and water pollution. As you can see it is a mask that is usually used and found in factories. The glass of the mask is acting as a fish tank, that's why there's fish and the colour of the water is a bit dark. 


I decided to add some vignette effects by using a black water flow. I also tried to add some vignettes as Sofia Minson mostly used//add vignette on her landscape/environment artwork.


Lastly, this is the final A3 size digital artwork in panel 2. I would say that this is the conclusion of my portfolio. In this artwork, I decided to draw a shore that is full of rubbish and dumped fishing gear and dead fish/ dolphins.  I have also decided to put the factory that is seen on the first panel.

Art 1.2 Art + Portfolio Art

In Art, my kaupapa is about water pollution and emission. As for my panel board 1, I mainly used acrylic paint. And so far, I have managed to finish the first board and now I am focusing on my second board. On the other hand, for 1.2 Art internals,  I was able to produce 3 dry media on A3 paper, proof sheet and I am using the artworks from my portfolio for the wet media.

Why? 

I have decided to draw, paint and take a picture of the following objects as my kaupapa is about water pollution and emission. Even though water pollution emission is a common subject matter for art, I have decided on this kaupapa as I thought that it's better if my kaupapa is something I have a deep knowledge of. Other than that, I also wanted to know more about this topic as water pollution and emission is still a problem to other countries outside New Zealand. And think about the effect of stray rubbish and emission has on the sea creatures.

All these drawings and pictures are referred from all the objects I could see during the time I was doing this. 

.The first drawing is a sketch of the bottom or base of a plastic bottle. I have used 5 different types of sketching. 
The techniques that I used are: 
- Finger blending
- Cross-hatching
- Scribble
- Hatching
- 3s

The second drawing is an empty cup(left) and a crashed can. In this drawing, the light is coming from the back which makes the shadow casting in front. The very dark shaded is the shadow of the can and the less dark is the surface the object was in.



This is the last dry medium that I sketch. Just like the tin can(right) above, this plastic bottle is also crashed. In this case, the light is coming from the bottom right or I should say from the front-right side of the object, which makes the shadow cast on its left-rear side. Personally, out of all the 3 dry media, this is my least favourite, as the shadow looked awkward and the dark shaded part in the plastic bottle looked off. 


As for this proof sheet, I have decided to take a picture of the unclean plastic water cup when I was painting. This picture is about the different perspectives/sides of the cup. I have used studio light, natural light and a monochrome effect of the camera. 








Wet media and brief explanation and meaning behind the artwork:

This is the first artwork on panel board 1. 

The first artwork on the folio board is digital artwork. The picture is about a fisherman throwing a fishnet in the sea during sunset. As for the fishnet, I deliberately made it look like a skull to indicate the meaning of danger to the species. The chemical factory is also reflected in the water.

Pathos, Ethos, and Logos

Pathos, Ethos and Logos are the rhetorical strategies that are used in persuasive writing and to persuade the audience. Each technique has a different meaning and purpose. However, in order to convince them, Pathos, Logos, and Ethos are very important in persuasive arguments. 

What is Pathos? 
Pathos is a Greek word meaning emotions. Just like the meaning, pathos is used to persuade and appeal to the emotions or feelings of the readers/audiences. The speaker communicates with the listeners and affects their feelings. There are many ways to appeal to the audiences' emotions, it could be with cute animals, by telling inspirational stories and personal experiences or anecdotes. Also, we normally hear and see this form of writing in courtrooms or in politicians' addresses as well as advertisements. An example of this was seen and heard in the famous speech of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr called I Have a Dream. "But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chain of discrimination"

In this speech of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr, he uses strong words and emphasis how the Negros are still not treated as equal individuals. He also showed the audience his desire for wanting his people to have their rights and future for everyone.

I have also decided to write my own sentence that has pathos. 
"We all make mistakes in our lives, but that does not mean that it's the end of our lives." 
This example emphasizes the thought of not giving up despite the wrongdoing we've done in our lives.
 
What is Ethos?
Ethos is a persuasive technique that emphasises the speaker's trustworthiness and authority to the listeners. Ethos is used to appeal to the audiences' ethnic responsibilities. This is normally seen or heard in advertisements or political addresses. The speaker only used credible and reliable sources in order to convince the audience. An example of ethos is heard in the commencement speech of Steve Jobs. 
"I never graduate from college, truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to college graduation."

In this speech, Jobs was trying to say that despite the situation of not graduating college himself he was able to reach his dream. Therefore, this made the audience doubted his achievement. However, the message of the speech and Jobs' objective was to persuade the students to find their passion.

What is Logos?
Logos is one of the persuasive strategies that convince the audience using logic or reasons. This is important as this is also used to back up your idea or claims. To use logos, it needs statistics, facts, and graphs. An example of Logos is this famous speech by Sojourner Truth, "Then that little man in black there, he says women can't have as much rights as men, 'cause Christ wasn't a woman!' Where did your Christ come from? Where did your Christ come from? From God and a woman! Man had nothing to do with Him. If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back , and get it right side up again! And now they is asking to do it, the men better let them." This is an example of logos as Sojourner Truth uses a reasonable argument about why women should be treated the same as men. This is supported and backed up by the bible.

So we know where and how to use and write a sentence that uses these three strategies for our upcoming persuasive writing.

Educational or Enjoyable School Trip?

From my perspective, school outings should be educational and at the same time enjoyable. That is because school outings should have a purpose, for example, they should learn new things and experience something outside the school. Sometimes, we can never learn or know and answer the students' curiosity without exploring things outside the school. In addition, if the trip is just for education why not stay at school and seat for hours looking at the TV screen. Also, while learning new things students can make memories with their peers and no doubt this will be a fun experience for the students. The students deserve to earn something and relieve their stress from school works or assessments.

To Relieve Pressure and Stress

To relieve some stress and pressure from schoolwork, I would give myself an hour of leisure reading. This will help me to take my mind off from too much worrying about my assessment and the credits I need to get before the study leave. After giving myself an hour of free time I would study for 2 hours and every 20 minutes, I would take off my mind from studying for 10 minutes. Along with an hour of leisure reading, I would try to get enough sleep (8-10 hours) so I won't feel tired at school. For example, I will sleep at 9:30pm and wake up at 6:30 am. Doing this will also make my mind clearer and function well in class.

Also, If I'm under pressure or stress I like to talk to my friends or family to share my thoughts, feeling, and what is happening to me. By doing this will somehow make me feel relieved and the heavy feeling will be lifted up from my shoulders.

What connections can you make between the two Artists Kaupapa and uses of the grid?

Tracey Tawhiao and Sofia Minson both use grids but Minson's gridding is not visible in her work, unlike Tawhiao. Sofia and Tracey both use patterns to express their ideas. Patterns are also seen in both of the work of the two artists. As for their kaupapa, both their artworks has a touch of Maori culture, they also use patterns and in their pieces. Sofia mostly used an earth tones palette and Tracey sometimes use this type of colour for her works, but most of Tracey's work consists of vibrant colour. 


This si an example of Sofia Minson's artwork.
In this artwork, you can see Minson uses grids but it's not pronounced as Tawhiao but we can still see it, especially when seeing different shades of blue. At the bottom of the artwork, we could see dark blue and as it goes up it becomes lighter and lighter. The triangle patterns also help us to see the horizontal lines.

In Tracey's artwork, she painted it on newspaper and she uses the grids of the newspaper to separate parts of her work.

Rinko Kawauchi Photography

In Art, we have been doing work that involves a camera. We have chosen a model artist, and I chose Rinko Kawauchi. After scrolling through all her work, I tried to replicate her photography style and edit it in Photoshop. Since I couldn't imitate her work, I tried to apply two or more styles of her work and edit it.

Rinko Kawauchi's style in photography is usually zoomed in or has a highlighted part in her photography. A serene, poetic style and depicting ordinary life characterises Kawauchi's work.





These are the picture that I took and edited.
After taking photos around the school, I edit them in Photoshop. Most of the pictures that I edit are focused on blue and white. I only adjust few things to exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, white and black. I have also adjusted the clarity to 100%.

Film Aspects

In English, we are now doing the next topic which is Film/Visual Language Study. To help us improve our knowledge about film text before we look deeply at our topic and before we watch a film, Mr Aitken gives us a task where we have to look into 4-6 different film aspects and show our understanding through DLO. I decide to do five-film aspects and I choose Over-the-shoulder, colour, POV, insert shot and tone. 

What and how are we learning?
WALT: Analyse how film aspects OTS, colour, POV, insert shot and tone shows meaning.
Success Criteria: I can explain why and how over-the-shoulder, colour, POV, insert shot and tone are used to show meaning in film. 
Why are we learning it?
The purpose of learning the film aspect is to improve our knowledge about the film aspect. It also to understand the purpose of the director and why he/she uses it in the film.
How did it go?
While doing this research, I've learned more about the film aspect that I didn't know before.

Describe the Artwork

The artwork comprises two buildings and a girl running with a hoop. The girl with the hoop looks like running towards the shadow of a large man with a stick or a spear in his right hand. The light is coming from behind the right building and illuminating the arcades on the left. In the dark area, we appear to see an open horsebox. This artwork of De Chirico is a set of parallel lines. 






Explain how subversion is demonstrated in this artwork's subject matter. 

The predecessor of the Surrealist movement, Giorgio de Chirico, intentionally subverted fictive spaces, typically city squares bordered by arcades or brick walls, to create an enigmatic experience and refute reality. The artist became interested in the notion of the eternal return and re-enactment of the myth after reading the German philosophers, particularly Friedrich Nietzsche. It was French poet Guillaume Apollinaire who first called de Chirico’s work ‘metaphysical’, from where the Metaphysical Art movement originated, with Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà as its leaders.Statement from Gallery Intell

Explain subversion is demonstrated in space and paint applications used by De Chirico.
Subversion is showed by spacing out within the objects and show a vanishing point. We see the vanishing point in the left building as the end of the building is fading away from the further away it goes from us. We can also see a colour contrast. The building on the right has a shade of black, the street and so the sunlight illuminates the architecture on the left side. 

In the painting, it has a girl with a hoop and a figure of a man and few materials (two buildings and a horse-box). The lack of interest in the materials in this painting is probably the point he is trying to highlight and the colour of his choice for this artwork is the idea he is trying to convey.

 What similarities can you list between Tawhiao and De Chirico's artwork?
- Tracey and De Chirico are both subversive artists. 
- The two artists both use grids, but De Chirico's artwork is less noticeable. 
- They both use a subject that will emphasise their artwork.

 Subversion through reconciling?

- Sofia Minson hopes the viewers will experience the ' qualities' of our nature reflecting back to us' through her exhibit.
- Sofia Minson like to honour the ancestors by naming her artwork after the ancestors and mythological deities from Maori culture.

- The portraits of each woman is not real or inspired by a real person, but it's influenced by deities from different cultures around the world.

Describe the Artwork:
This artwork shows a Maori paddle (waka) with very detailed patterns and symbols. It also has a gloomy weather background with a small amount of light from the sun. From my perspective, the background of the paddle, the dark clouds somehow look like a wave.  

Does Minson's work show subversion? If so how? If not, why?
This artwork of Sofia Minson shows subversion as it has meaning behind the work. For example, this artwork is reminding and bringing out the idea that without the Maori ancestor, travelling through the Pacific, they won't be here in New Zealand. Since according to the description of the artwork, this artwork is about honouring and remembering our ancestors who navigated throughout the Pacific. It also says that the three waka represent our ancestors who survived and face the hurdles in their life, just like how they handle the waves in the ocean when they were sailing. 

How does she use what exists already to inform her ideas?
Minson uses a massive range of ideas and put them in her own understanding. She didn't just use one culture in her artwork but she combined all other culture such as; Maori, Polynesian, Asian, Egyptian and other cultures. She uses the other culture to find the similarity from her Maori culture.  
                                                                                                                                                                   
What difference can you list between Minson and Tracey's work?
- Tracey used diverse vivid and polychromatic colours, unlike Minson she used monochrome colours and if she would add colour, it's going to be dark and bold. 
- Tracey's pieces are done in the newspaper while Minson's works are done on canvas. 
- Tracey includes text on her artwork, Minson doesn't.
- Tracey's artworks are mostly Maori patterns, and Sofia's artworks are diverse-cultured.

Week 7: Reflection in ESOL

In ESOL, we have been reading the second book of Gary Paulsen called The River. These past few weeks that we have been reading, I found the story very interesting as it's about a journey of a boy trying to survive in the woods. As in the second book, three men asked Brian if he could recreate what happened to him in the first book (Hatchet). However, this time he is not the only one who needs to survive in the woods, he is trying to get through in wildness together with a psychiatrist named Dereck. Dereck would be the one who will write what they're or what Brian is doing in the woods that enables him to survive. But little did Brian know after a smooth week of spending in the woods, a disaster strike. A bolt of lightning hit their shelter that was made by Dereck and himself.

So far, I like the flow of the book. What I like about the story is because somehow the book is based on a true event. The book conveyed a message on how to make fire just by using a knife and flint. It also tells what people need to do in case they are in the same situation as Brian and Dereck. Another purpose of the book was to teach people who read the book in case they got in the same position as Brian and Dereck. Just like I said, the story can educate the audience as I learned that even though people are in a state of coma, their body system is still excreting.

EAGLES: Desperado

In ESOL, we have created a scenario that shows a desperate person. In our scene, there is a desperate person and the reason he is desperate was for his family. Since he needs to do something for his family, he needs to commit a crime to be.

We've also listened to a song called 'Desperado' by The EAGLES. For me, the song is about a desperate person on a run. The person in the song is telling himself to stop being a reckless person as nothing good will happen if he's desperate. It also says in the song that you can never feel the freedom even though he is on the run and walking freely without people noticing and he said it feels like he is in prison even though he is free.

Wananga Reflection

This week at school I have done many things. Such as I have studied after school for all of my subjects which I rarely do. This week I have also done and started some assessment for some of my subjects. On Wednesday morning, it was the first day of our internal Math assessment and it was nerve-wracking and my hands were too cold and my mind was blank and nothing was coming into my brain. Fortunately, on Thursday, Mrs Buenaventura gives us a chance to continue the assessment we started on Wednesday. The internals Math assessment was worth four credits.  Today I have done an end of chapter review test in Science and I think I didn't do well as I didn't get to study yesterday because I was too tired to understand what I am reading. The only internal assessment I am worried about is the creative writing for English. I'm kinda struggling as I sometimes run out of ideas to write but I know I can finish it.

 

The reason why I am so tired yesterday was that the school held an Athletics event. Yesterday's Athletic Day was fun and the Riroriro house won the event. There are three houses; Mohua, Riroriro and Tieke and I am in Mohua. I was wearing yellow since that is my Kahui colour. The event I did was high jump, long jump, shot-put and 60m sprint.

Blog Post 2 -Tracey Tawhiao Subversion AS 90913 v4 internal assessment 4 credits - Literacy

1. Wide reading approach: Subversion as a compositional framework. Tracey Tawhiao- Draw a thumbnail sketch and label everything - one Artwork

2. Record: What can you categorise the objects she uses as and why?

Tracey Tahwiao uses a triangle(maunga), fish, a double koru, a shaded line, a rectangle with rounded ends and a rectangle inside and South Canterbury cave art. 

- Maunga/ triangle is used to represent the mountains.
- Fish is used to represent
- Double koru- means that two lives growing together.
- Rectangle with rounded ends and a rectangle inside- I think it represents that two race is living in the same place. In this case,  the outside rectangle represents the pakeha while the inside rectangle represents the Maori.
Triangle - represent the 2 race
- South Canterbury cave art- it represents the Maori culture and the cave was used as their shelter.

The reason why she did this was to show how the Maori people lose their land after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. The rectangles represent the lands that were confiscated from them. The triangles that are shaded and the triangles with lines represent the separation of the 2 ethnic groups living in the same community or nation. Maunga and fish represent the decrease of the economy due to government purchases and outright confiscation.

She separates her work using grids. She also left some spaces to show the text from the newspaper and to add more meaning to her painting. 


4. Record: Talk about colour in his work- what can you describe?
The colour that she uses in this painting is monochromatic green, blue and as well as grey.

ESOL

In ESOL, we have a student teacher in our class. Mr Stephenson has asked us a question.

What three items would be best to have if you were lost in the mountains in New Zealand in winter, and why?


If I were lost in the mountain of New Zealand in winter, It would be great to have with me an emergency kit, an extra jacket and a hatchet. I can probably survive for two days in the mountains if I have these three items before I'm found by rescuers.


Having an emergency kit is helpful as it has these essentials: radio, batteries, torch, flares, pocket knife, a small amount of food ration, a medicine kit and a blanket to keep me warm, will somehow make my horrible situation a little easier. Since they can send signals, flares would be the first-most useful thing in the emergency kit and then the rescuers will know my location. The second item will be the medication kit, in case I’m injured, having this would be useful. I can treat my injury and stop the potential infection if I have a medicine kit. The food ratio would be the last important thing for me in the emergency kit, of course, I needed food and water to survive in the mountains, food and water would give me energy so that during this situation I would be able to think clearly. 



An extra warm jacket would be needed since I'm out in the jungle in the winter. Since a jacket is a strong heat conductor, it will help me to keep my body warm and prevent body heat loss. Considering that it is expected to be colder and windows at night in winter.


The last item that would be best if I have during this circumstance is a hatchet, being in a wild place there is a high possibility that wild animals are lurking around where I’m staying or standing. I know that safety comes first and having this I can protect myself from any harm. I can also use a hatchet to cut branches and build a shelter to use it at night.


Wananga Reflection

This past few days in Wananga we have only done a few things as our Wananga teacher wasn't here for most days. We have set 2 Academic and 1 Personal Goal in My Mahi. Then we have also done the weekly quiz created by Mr Mitchell. When our teacher was here we have played the Geoguessr.

WTE Sentence

The Simple Sentence

Simple sentences begin with the subject of the sentence (e.g he, she, it, they, I, someone's name, or a place).

Eg.

- I have watched a movie over the weekend.

The Very Short Sentence

The very short sentence IS one of the most powerful sentence styles ever developed. Immediately, it grabs your attention.  The rule: five words or fewer

Eg.

-Her hair is very short.

The Power Sentence

If you find you waffle a bit, try the power sentence. Begin your paragraph with a power sentence of 12 words or fewer. Get straight to the point.

Eg.

- Rosa Park was American activities and civil rights

Red, White and Blue

Use the red, white, and blue sentence-style when you have several ideas to convey about a topic.

Eg.

- At school I used, pencil, pen and Chromebook.
-  Her favourite subject is Science, Math and Social Studies.

The Adverb Start

Start a sentence with an adverb, as it adds interest and intrigue. Remember the rule: when you start your sentence with an adverb, place a comma after the adverb then write the rest of the sentence.

Eg.

- Surprisingly, I got a great result on my test.
- Finally, it's the last period of the day.

Begin with Preposition
A Preposition is little words indicating movement or position.
Eg.
- On 2 September 1945, the war ended across the world.
- After the Treaty of Waitangi, a lot of English people came to New Zealand 

The -ING Start

Try starting a sentence with the -ing form of a verb. The rule: when you have finished your -ing phrase, place a comma, then write the rest of

the sentence.

Eg.

- Looking back from last year, I realised It was the worst year of my life.

The -Ed Start

Try starting a sentence with the —ed form of the verb. It makes for a punchy opening to the sentence.

Eg.

- Determined to win the race, she accidentally hurt her ankle.


The Semi-Colon

When you have two independent clauses (two mini-sentences) joined by a conjunction (e.g. and, but), you can remove the conjunction and replace it with a semi-colon.

Eg.

The -Em dash

The em-dash in English is the long dash. Use the long dash to drop a phrase in a 

a sentence that is at complete odds with the flow of the sentence—way out there—but which adds colour and interest.

Eg.
- Brocolli a very well known vegetable — is rich in high nutrients.

The W-Start Sentence
Try beginning a sentence with a W-word. Here are some: who, while, when, where, what, whereas. The W-start makes writing sound thoughtful and knowledgeable.
Eg.
- While the teacher is discussing, students continue to talk.

Explore the Subject
Accomplished writers use this sentence-style. The rule: begin your sentence with the subject then place a comma. Say something interesting about the subject. Place another comma. Then, finish your sentence.
Eg.
- Myka, whose birthday was two days ago, has turned 15 years old.

MoodBoard

In Art, I have made a mood board that contains artwork of several artists around Aotearoa. Most of the artwork in my mood board has a warm colour pallet. By looking at it my mood board are mostly about the environment and women. 




Brainstorming Themes and Ideas

 In Art, I have created a mindmap to put all of my ideas for each theme, doing this will help me with my portfolio. I'm still deciding what theme I should do but I think I there are til more ideas I can put for each theme.

321 RIQ || ESOL

 Today, In ESOL we learnt a new strategy of reflecting. We learnt how to use 321 RIQ and the meaning behind the acronym.

2 Insights - 2 new things I learnt in this lesson.
1 Question - I question I have about something I didn't understand or still want to know more about.


2. Write a 321 RIQ reflection of 1 ESOL so far.

3 Recalls- 
- In ESOL I remember that we have done a self introduce by doing the game where we have to say an adjective word about us that starts with the first letter of our name, we also have to say a thing that we like that also has to start with the first letter of our first name. 
- We have also written things about ourselves and gave it to Mrs Truter, our new ESOL teacher. 
- We have also written a paragraph about the benefits of blogging during class.

2 Insights
- This past few days I haven't learnt new things and done any practical works since we have just started introducing and the teachers still explain what is going to happen this year, and how the internals and externals will work.
- I have learnt facts about Mrs Truter, she is new in Christchurch. She has also been teaching in Auckland for 20 years before coming to Christchurch. She is also from South Africa and she also teaches there.

Treaty of Waitangi

 What do you know about the Treaty of Waitangi?

Many years have passed and Waitangi became a holiday that is now many people are commemorating. Waitangi Day is mostly for Maori people to reflect on the treaty. 

The treaty was signed on 6th of February 1840. It was signed by over 500 chiefs all around New Zealand. Although many chiefs agree with the treaty, there are also some Maori chiefs that refuse to sign the treaty as they believe that they're gonna lose their power and authority towards their land, people and mana. The treaty is about between two culture and two languages agreement in which are the Maori people and Europeans. The treaty is mostly about Europeans being able to stay and having authority over New Zealand. It was also about an agreement about British people protecting Maori people but the Maori translation is not accurate and has different meanings.  

The two culture had a huge conflict as they have a misunderstanding of words and the words are not accurately translated from English to Maori. This creates a huge problem between them as the English people meant to use the word 'Sovereignty' but when it translates, it becomes 'Governorship' in Maori.
